Some schools offer fantastic academic support...but you also want to be exposed to local, state, national, and international people and programs in order to apply your knowledge. I am going to tell you right now...I am going to sell you my school so be prepared. I am an Earth and Environmental Engineering major, I have so many opportunities because of where it is--NYC (Columbia U). We have lots of affiliates so it provides great internships on renewable energy along with sustainable development, water sanitation (my concentration), along with things that go right in hand with energy like economic development, policy, etc. There is also an INCREDIBLY large outreach to the international community which gives students and opportunity to see how non-US administrations go about tackling energy related issues. It depends on where you go. I saw a story the other day that the book that rates the top colleges now added a "green" category. They rate colleges by a wide variety of topics now they have added environmentally friendly to the list. I don't know about renewable energy. I would think engineering and chemistry classes would be the way to go. You won't find much of that at Unity but they are available at any major university.
