It’s a pointless exercise because all of the electricity comes from the same generators connected to the same grid.

Sounds like you been listening to Al Gore. This is the sort of thing we should be resisting. This is what is going to make living so expensive. When I first read your question I thought it sounded like carbon credits. I could be wrong but I think you need to have an industry that produces oxygen like a forest or crop lands to be able to buy these certificates.
